There are 2 styles of toilets--Western and Japanese.  The Japanese ones don't usually have a "split level" floor like the one in the picture but I seem to have been remiss in my photographic duties and this is the only representation I have, taken last November n Hokkaido because I was intrigued by the way the sink water flows when the toilet is flushed.  Mind you, actually reaching the sink is a bit of an undignified affair.

For western visitors there is the "Potties for Dummies" instruction placard.
